Project Overview
One of our maltings customers was having issues with the winch on their Steep
Gyrocleur, whereby it kept snapping bearings, racks and pinions. Many other
companies had offered to “beef up” the steelwork, but our experience told us that it
wouldn’t solve the problem.
Scope of works

  • Redesigned the winch from a rack and pinion type winch to a cable winch with
    slack-cable detection.
  • Installed and commissioned new winch with associated supports.

Challenges
The challenge here was that we had to find a way to ensure the cables would never
go slack if the Gyrocleur was to get stuck on something on it’s way down. We did this
by designing and installing a slack rope detector to each cable, which would
automatically cut off the traverse as soon as it senses any slack in the cables.

Outcome
This upgrade has allowed the customer to continue operations, while eliminating
downtime completely.
